You’re only as smart as your last lesson

If you’ve followed me this far, you may see a certain trajectory in the near future. I now have a blog to collect my thoughts, a list of potential customers, and the drive to start making some moves. I cannot stress enough the importance of all the time spent in between all of those activities. Whenever possible brush up on the latest everything! Hopefully it goes without saying that Real Estate related knowledge is key. Knowing the market trends, neighborhoods of focus, average house prices, etc…, keep you in the game. Knowing peripheral fields gets you ahead. The latest tech at your disposal whether it’s social media(highlighting listings), photography(using a drone is good for outside shots), or even VR to expand the accessibility of your open houses. Almost anything can be turned into a Real Estate adjacent field. The more things you know at least a general grasp on can save you from missing out on a potential client. The more you common interests you have the more knowledgeable and trustworthy you present yourself. Remember, while you are selling houses, you are also selling yourself and your competency. Always take advantage of any opportunity to learn something new. There are plenty of other agents out there for them to use, so why should they choose you?

Its who you know…

Real Estate like any other sales type industry has no leg to stand on if there is no one to sell things to. You can have the most revolutionary approach to selling things, but without customers you have nothing. There’s even a reason they call it a “contact” list instead of a customer list. The reason is that this is not a one time thing. In order to capture a sale more than likely you will need to maintain “contact” with these folks until the right opportunity presents itself. This includes followup calls and other types of checking in sessions. While this may seem tedious it serves a great purpose. For whatever reason, alot of people have no desire to volunteer information freely. Every follow up has to potential to yield more contacts. I can barely count the amount of times I follow-up with someone and they tell me of a relative, friend, or co-worker that is looking to buy or sale a home. My first thought is “why didn’t you refer me”, but that is quickly squashed by the realization that that is not their job, its mine. I need to know how and when to ask the right questions to solicit this type of information. While you may feel that you are becoming a nuisance by checking up on folks with limited interest in your chosen profession, studies have shown that increasing your contact with a person by one extra time per year can result in an additional 3-5 viable contacts. This also doesn’t end with a sale. Maintaining contact on anniversaries of sales and birthdays can also yield more results for you. There is literally no closed in to this step. Always be open to networking. Always be ready to sell your acquired experience. You never know who might be listening. Next entry we’ll cover Market Trends.

First Steps

When it was first brought up to me that a blog would be a good way of tracking my progress and helping shape my future plans, I was reluctant. I was never one to have a journal as a kid nor excelled beyond the most basic of essays when it was required as a student. Thankfully we now live in a time where it is quite easy to get started as long as you know how to point and click and drag and drop and type. On the flip side of this new found convenience another problem arose. Too many choices! The best idea I could come up with was to start with the most basic fully customizable choice out there so you can get started asap. The main thing in this whole process was going through all the motions to make sure this is something I actually wanted to do. The free sites out there let me jump right in so I could decide if it was a pursuit worthy of my time. If after a short run of posts I decide it isn’t, no harm no foul I just cease my actions with no future billing concerns whatsoever. If i did find joy in blogging I could always upgrade to a more masterful site that has more functions and support to make sure I’m getting the most out of each entry. Next up, getting my contacts list in ready…
